Kinesiology Taping

There are various different types of taping and strapping techniques that can be used to support and protect soft tissue and joints, aid in injury prevention and help with rehabilitation.  Unlike most types of athletic tape that have very little, or no stretch at all, Kinesiology Tape is very elastic.  Unless very severe, the vast majority of injuries or soft tissue dysfunction does not require complete immobilisation and this is where this type of taping really comes in to its own.

Kinesiology Tape is designed to provide the same elasticity as human skin and is used to help manage pain, reduce inflammation/swelling and provide support whilst allowing full range of motion.  If more stability is required, a greater stretch can be applied to the tape upon application.

Kinesiology Tape microscopically lifts the skin, increasing the interstitial space which allows more blood to flow to the area helping increase the recovery and repair process, as well as allowing lymph fluid to easily drain thereby decreasing inflammation & swelling.

Whilst the application of Kinesiology Tape can be helpful as a standalone tool, a full assessment of the client and incorporating it alongside other treatment modalities is usually the best way to gain optimal results.

I use RockTape, which is very good quality kinesiology tape and rarely causes irritation to the skin.  They also produce a version which is gentler on the skin, so more suitable for children or people with more fragile or sensitive skin.

What are some of the benefits?
  • Helps reduce pain

  • Provides support for weak or injured muscles

  • Stabilises without restricting range of movement

  • Aids in active recovery

  • Helps influence the function of fascia and muscles

  • Activates muscles

  • Can relax and offload overused/overstrained muscles

  • Assists re-educating the neuromuscular system

  • Reduces oedema

  • Correct postural imbalance

  • Can help prevent injury

  • Improve blood and lymphatic flow

Who is it suitable for?

The use of Kinesiology tape is safe for most people, however there are certain conditions that may prevent or restrict use.

The following conditions are a total contraindication:

  • Severe Allergic Reactions to Acrylic (or other components of the adhesive)
