Advanced Clinical/Sports Massage

When our soft tissue (fascia, muscles, tendons and ligaments) does not function as it should, it can cause pain, discomfort, weakness, reduced mobility and postural deformity.

So many chronic pain conditions are caused by soft tissue dysfunction. These can arise from an injury or direct trauma, but equally from poor posture, repetitive movements, lifestyle and  stress. Therefore, it's likely to be something all of us will experience at some point in our lives.

By identifying and addressing this, significant changes can be made to assist in correcting the problems and imbalances that will help reduce pain, discomfort & associated symptoms and increase mobility.

In most cases, where we experience the pain isn't actually where the problem is.  Therefore, assessment is as important as the hands on treatment.

 This includes:

- Postural assessment

- Joint range of movement (active, passive, resisted)

- Orthopaedic / Special tests

- Muscle length tests

- Pre and post treatment benchmarking

The treatment consists of warming the muscles/fascia and then the use of advanced soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release, soft tissue release, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques and deep frictions to target tightness, break down scar tissue, adhesions and help restore normal function.

Clients can expect a tailored and personalised treatment where I will utilise techniques and skills from all of my disciplines and offer self care advice with the aim of getting the best results as quickly as possible.

This type of treatment can be hugely beneficial to most people, not just those who take part in sports. A shoulder issue, whether caused by swimming, throwing a ball for your dog or using a mouse on your computer every day, will be very similar, cause the same sort of pain and be treated the same way.

In a sporting context, the application of sports massage aids recovery, helps prevent injury and may help enhance performance.

Pre-event Massage

The aim of a pre-event massage is to:

  • Optimise performance

  • Warm the soft tissue

  • Increase blood supply to muscles

  • Decrease muscular tension

  • Help prevent injury

  • Encourage appropriate range of movement

  • Create a state of 'readiness' for activity

  • Help with mental preparation

Ideally, pre-event massage should be performed as close to the event as possible.  However, it can still be hugely beneficial even up to a couple of days beforehand.

Post-event Massage

The aim of a post-event massage is to:

  • Promote faster healing and reduce swelling

  • Aids recovery

  • Help alleviate or reduce joint stiffness and DOMS

  • Return muscles to a relaxed state and help normalise soft tissue

  • Flush out toxins and congested areas

  • Relieve muscle cramps and spasms

  • Helps with general relaxation

Post-event massage is much lighter and superficial than a normal treatment and can be done immediately following an event and be the most beneficial treatment to aid in recovery.
